At ASAE Annual, You're the Member

For four days in Indianapolis, you're on the other side of the table. Several hundred exhibitors are going to tell you their platform drives engagement, their agency understands associations, their solution was built for organizations exactly like yours.

You'll believe almost none of it. Not because they're lying, but because a claim from a stranger with a booth is worth close to nothing, and you know it.

What does end up changing your mind? A peer. Someone at the reception who says "we've run that for eighteen months, here's what worked." Someone in a session who names the vendor and the number. You'll weigh that sentence more heavily than thirty minutes of demo, and you'll weigh it even though the person saying it has no case study, no slide, and no stake in whether you buy.

The 2026 Edelman Trust Barometer found the same pattern at a larger scale: trust is contracting inward, toward people who feel familiar, and away from institutions.

Most of the time, you are on the other side of this table. You are the one making the claims. Your position at ASAE Annual is the exact position your members are in when they land on your join page.

Five claims sitting on your website right now

Open your own site in another tab. Most associations have a version of all five.

"Our members are highly engaged."

Lives on your about page and in every board report. Nobody outside your organization can check it, which is why it slides off.

What would prove it: a member describing, unprompted, something they did because of your organization. Not a statement about how much they value membership but a specific action, with a date attached.

"Our annual meeting is the event no one skips."

Lives on your registration page, usually next to a speakers list or agenda highlights.

What would prove it: a first-timer from last year, on camera, naming what they went home and changed. If nobody on your team can point to one, that's worth knowing before you build the 2027 campaign.

"The best professional education in the field."

Lives on your education and certification pages, maybe supported by session ratings.

What would prove it: someone naming the session, then naming the thing they now do differently at work.

"Sponsors reach real decision-makers."

Lives in your prospectus, answered with attendance figures and job-title breakdowns. Both are forecasts about opportunity.

What would prove it: an exhibitor from last year saying what they got. Your sponsors have to defend renewal to a CFO, and a traffic count doesn't survive that meeting.

"Membership pays for itself."

Lives on your join page, directly beside the price — the largest promise you make all year, supported by a bulleted benefit list.

What would prove it: a member doing the arithmetic out loud, in their own words. Let them stumble through it.

The proof gets made at your event, then evaporates

Not this event. Yours.

Every year your members spend three days telling each other those exact sentences, with specifics, unprompted, more candidly than any post-event survey will ever pull out of them. Then everyone flies home. What survives is a photo gallery and a satisfaction score.

Twelve months later you're writing next year's registration page from scratch, describing what the experience will be like, because you're holding nothing that shows what it was.

We call that distance the Proof Gap — the space between what you promise and what you can show at the moment someone decides. Most associations aren't short on proof. It exists in fragments, in people's memories, in a folder of raw footage nobody cut. It's just never sitting on the page where the decision happens.

Two assignments

This week, notice. Every time an exhibitor moves you from skeptical to interested, write down what did it. My guess is it'll almost always be a third party, for example, a name, a number, another association's experience. Keep that list. It's a free specification for your own marketing, written by the toughest audience you have.

At your next event, make a plan to capture this content. We can help!

When you then place this content on the pages and the places that matter, watch how your conversion rates take off.

Curious where your gap is widest? We just created a new free tool, now in beta, called the Proof Gap Score where we review your website and see where you fall on the continuum of Promise to Proof. Get your Proof Gap Score right now.
